Dublin is full of activities. It is a giant playground to the intrepid traveller.  Pretty much anything you can think of is going on somewhere in the city. That’s why when we heard you could go wakeboarding in the canal, we weren’t even surprised. We went off down to WakeDock in the Grand Canal Dock to try it out for ourselves.

The Docklands are a sight in themselves that are often missed by visitors to the city. Nicknamed the ‚Silicon Dock‘ after Silicon Valley, recent rejuvenation of the area has made it one of the most exuberant areas of Dublin attracting big businesses like Google, Facebook, and Twitter. It is home to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre, the U2 recording studios, and the historic RNLB Mary Stanford lifeboat; the only boat ever to receive a gold medal for gallantry.

WakeDock is Ireland’s first cable wakeboard park. Located in the sheltered docks, it is the perfect place for beginners and first timers to hit the proverbial waves. Being in the canal and towed from a cable strung above the rider, there is actually no waves, or even wake. This might sound strange for wakeboarding but it makes picking up the basics so much easier. Most beginners will be standing on their first run.

There is also a kicker ramp and slider rail for the experts to pull some gnarly tricks on. Get down early before your session to see the pros on the line and get some inspiration, or watch in awe. Everyone that works at WakeDock is a seasoned boarder and can give you the best tuition and advice.

Sessions run from €25 per person. A snip for what you get. The most fun and a great story to add to your travels. Where else can you say you wakeboarded in a canal anywhere other than Dublin? The crew take bookings from a single person up to large groups. A brilliant and alternative way to spend your day that will leave you with more than memories.
